This is Alexis' 3rd BIL. She recently accepted a part time position with Voxer.com as office manager to support her learning addiction.  She enjoys learning about the effects of trauma and how to treat it, willpower, self-compassion, and meditation.

Alexis' long-term goal is to become a licensed psychotherapist.  Currently she has a part-time psychotherapy internship working with trauma survivors.  Her hobbies include training for the Tough Mudder run, coordinating events for friends, and spending time with loved ones.  She is also a co-founder of BIL, a founding member of Hike the Geek and lover of bacon.

She would like to thank attendee Matt Knopp for being her sounding board, transporter, sanity check, personal sponsor and wonderful boyfriend.

Dean G spent 13 years of his life behind an audio mixer and field radio engineer.  He is volunteering to manage whatever Simone and other volunteers can wrangle in terms of A/V equipment, including donating the use of some of his own equipment.  He has been a Telecommunications Network Consultant, and occasionally partnered with EnVision Wireless (EVWI.com).  He will  occasionally mix audio, for special events, conventions, and live broadcasts. He was the lead A/V volunteer for BIL 2009.  He did an amazing job of making things go.

He is recently engaged and thrilled about it!

Oh, and he happily accepts gifts of 1 or 2 gig PC3200 400 Mhz memory chips to upgrade aging computers.  Same with internal or external hard drives and enclosures.

Bleys is a multi-purpose, multi-dimensional, pan-interfacial sophont who spent much of his youth hiding in libraries, planning to take over the world. The rest he spent out in the open, organizing leadership conferences, volunteering for youth groups, trying to hide the remains of rotten durians, and perpetrating random acts of kindness.

You know those "you must be this tall to ride" signs? Well the ride of me has one of those. The only difference is that I scratched out tall, replaced it with clever, and stuck a copy of Isaac Asimov's "The Last Question" over the height bar. Basically, if you can wrap your head around that story and enjoy it then you're probably my sort of person. Most of what I do has something to do with science and technology. I love the promise of technology, I'm deeply aware of the risks, and I'm in awe of our dependence on it now just to exist.  For BIL, I'm engaged in bit-wrangling and may also be involved in photon-farming and sapience-mongering.  I've studied rationalism, I can give you the gist of the world's religions, I'm intimately familiar with many global existential risk vectors, and I have the ideals of a person who expects all of humanity to one day be something much greater. I live on the hope that you will not face death or despair.  Along that line, I enjoy sharing my negative utilitarian leanings and would be charmed to have you as a part of my living solar system.  There's a small chance I know something about computers and data analysis, but I didn't tell you that. Dimidium facti qui coepit habet: sapere aude, incipe.

Jobs that need doing:

  • Geeks and Nerds - The nerds coordinate all the technology at BIL, things like internet, audio/visual, streaming media, and so on.
  • Door Minders - During the event we need a volunteer for each room to help things flow smoothly.  This includes making sure the rooms don't overfill and coordinating flow.
  • Time Lord - The Time Lord is to help the speakers keep track of time to ensure that everyone gets to speak.  There are 3 areas to give talks.  We ideally would like 2-3 shifts per room per day.
  • A/V Guys -We'll need help running the A/V equipment, especially in the main room. If you have experience with this PLEASE add your name here. (dean,, Ross)
  • Media Mavens - The Media Mavens help disseminate the content being produced at BIL.  This consists of assisting the various media organizations (new and old) by coordinating speaker interviews, internet access, positioning, and so on.
  • Messengers (don't kill them) - The Messengers coordinate the real-time communications during the conference, managing the blog, wiki, and twitter accounts.  They take information from the various teams and distribute it to the other participants. This team will primarily use the backchannel twitter accounts @bilorg and @bilvol.
  • Speaker Wrangler - The Speaker Wranglers are the point communication people with the speakers.  They function as speaker check in for the speakers to sign in with a cell-phone number and name in case changes need to be made mid conference.  They help the speakers get in touch with the a/v person that is running the slide technology that day.  The lead wrangler will create a new page that has the pictures of the speaker wranglers up there so speakers will know who to find to get to their talks.
  • Photographers - Anyone can volunteer to be a photographer.  We'd ideally like a couple of fixed volunteers so that we are sure to get some great photos of everything.  If you have a flickr account, upload your photos to flicker, and tag them #bil2011 or #bilconference2011 and label them creative commons so we can use them for future BILs.
  • Totipotent Team - The Totipotent Team is available to help out on every single task listed above and then some.  Please be careful about putting your name on this list you WILL be asked to do a A LOT! (Simone Syed, Alexis Bright, Reichart, Mark Weinberg)
