- About Page

BIL is…

an open, self-organizing, emergent, and arts, science, society and technology conference.

Nobody is in charge.

If you want to come, just show up.

If you have an idea to spread, start talking.

If someone is saying something interesting, stop and listen.

The Concept

BIL loves TED. TED is a great place to sit and listen to interesting ideas. Many of those ideas make it online, and millions get to experience them.

The catch for many of us is that TED is $6,000, which is too expensive for most people, including a great number with good ideas worth spreading. BIL has been created as a free space for people with ideas to come together and share them.

Our event is self-organizing, emergent, and anarchic. Nobody is in charge. If you want to come just show up. If you’ve got an idea to spread start talking. If someone is saying something good, stop and listen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What?

At some point we realized we are all interesting people with worthwhile things to say, and it didn’t make sense to rely always on centrally organized ways for spreading ideas. There is a time and place for traditional conferences, TED is a great conference, but perhaps a little emergence and anarchy is needed.

Are you affiliated with the Technology, Entertainment, and Design conference?

No. BIL shares the same culture. For information about TED, see their website.

Who organizes BIL?

Nobody, or rather, you do. We all organize BIL. BIL emerges from our collective consciousness.

Who speaks at BIL?

You do. There will be instructions on the Schedule page of the wiki on how to coordinate this.

What does it cost to come to BIL?

Nothing. Just show up, then discuss and learn.

When is BIL?

BIL2009 will be Feb 7-8, 2009 in Long Beach, CA.

- - Kindred Conferences

These are conferences or events which BIL wants to help promote. If you’d like your event or conference listed here, please check the guidelines.

Kindred Guidelines

We’d be happy to promote conferences and events that are in the same vein as BIL. These show up as blog postings on the front page, and are listed in a sub-section of the Conferences page.

We’ve picked a set of standards for which conferences to promote through this channel. This might seem odd, given that we’re an ‘open’ conference, and we’re open to suggestions. The reason behind the curation is to maintain focus. Bear in mind we encourage participants to promote their causes through other forums.

Our rough decision metric

  1. The conferences should be hosted by academic or non-profit institutions.

BIL doesn’t mind capitalism, but this isn’t the appropriate venue for promoting events which are profit oriented.

  2. The conferences should address large-scale problems or causes.

BIL is trying to make the world a better place, and we want to promote ideas which will have a big impact.

  3. The conferences should generally be apolitical, i.e. not dominated by one political party over another.

BIL wants all parties to engage in discourse, and strongly political party conferences are too conceptually homogeneous for our tastes.

  4. Promotion does not mean BIL agrees with any particular viewpoint, just that we feel the topic warrants debate.

BIL has no position. BIL promotes discussion and action, but does not advocate any particular course of action.

  5. Being on the ‘promote’ list requires a majority vote between Tyler Emerson, Bill Erickson, and Todd Huffman.

BIL participants are welcome to promote any event they want through their own channels, but this particular channel is curated. The decisions are made on the above rules, and on whether the event

fits an undescribable ‘certain something’ BIL is going for. A decision of yes or no also depends on the context — we might not choose something because we’ve seen a lot of similar things lately and feel the topic is adequately covered.

- - Organize a BIL

Would you like your own BIL? Go for it!

If you would like to organize a BIL in your area, create a Wiki Page! Look at Past/Upcoming BIL’s for ideas on how to get started.

Read the Organizing a BIL page for tips from other organizers (and if you’ve organized one, add your own tips).

There are no “rules” for organizing a BIL. We just ask that your event, if it uses the BIL name, conform to a few BIL guidelines:

  • Naming convention - BIL:location year. Year is usually left off if this is the first one in that location. Examples: BIL:UK 2009 and BIL:Tuscon. BIL year is reserved for the original BIL which follows TED (BIL2008 and BIL2009).
  • Wiki Pages - Try and contain all the “wiki action” for your event on one wiki page, with the same name as your event. If you need multiple pages, name them event page title to prevent confusion between events. Example: BIL2009Ideas
  • Free and open to all. We understand some BIL’s will have limited space, but attendence should not be limited to certain people. Example: If there was a BIL:Texas A&M University limited to only A&M students, this is not a true BIL.
  • Share content with the world. Share photos from the event through sites like flickr, audio and video through youtube. Also, soon the BIL Conference website will be able to share content, so try and collect as much as possible at your event.

- Sponsors

Are you interested in Footing the BIL?

There are things more important than money, we’re here to build a community. If you like BIL it’s more important that you engage and interact with other BIL participants than fork over money for advertising spots. Nobody is getting rich off BIL — last year all of the organizers put in money (and for the record, would do it again in an instant!).

However, there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch, and money enables us to do things that we can’t do for free.

What we’ll be doing with donations…

Rent the venue

Get event insurance

Rent useful things like PA systems, chairs, tables, et cetera

Build the website

It costs about $10,000 to run BIL, all of which comes from donations.

Convinced? Here’s how you donate…

1. Go to [coming soon]

2. Put in money

Send the following to HuffmanTM@gmail.com

1. Your company name

2. A logo for your company

3. Your URL

4. A short message to list with your company (optional)
