BIL:UK 2010 Location

Page history last edited by Joelle McNichol 14 years, 2 months ago
A location hasn't been set (other than Oxford). Currently this page is for the Volunteers

Possible Facilities:

Pubs! Hold BIL throughout Oxford at 3-4 pubs.

- To find pubs, use this map (http://www.dailyinfo.co.uk/sheet/maps/2007/v2-2_by-night.pdf) and these reviews (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/10/10889/Cock_Camel/Oxford)

- Jericho Tavern: A pub with facilities - as used by Oxford geek nightshttp://oxford.openguides.org/wiki/?Jericho_Tavern . Holds over a hundred

- Jam Factory http://www.thejamfactoryoxford.com/ nice building (old home of Frank Cooper's Oxford marmalade) space for exhibition, talks etc. Holds over a hundred, but over several smaller rooms (biggest would hold 40ish)

- Cape of Good Hope: where the Oxford Twestival is held http://oxford.twestival.com/ http://thecapeofgoodhopeoxford.co.uk/

- The Old Bookbinders: recently CAMRA award winning. "If a pub with a bike, inflatable crocodile and a train set hanging from the ceiling is your thing, you might just want to settle down here." Free to hire function room for 20 / 30 at a push http://oxford.openguides.org/wiki/?Bookbinders

- The Rose & Crown, 14 North Parade Avenue - Used for the Oxford Internet Conversations. Central. Recall having an excellent cider there once.http://www.rose-n-crown.com/ Too small

If we decide to go with a formal facility:

Rewley House: literally down the street from TED, 30 second walk. Dept of Continuing Education's building, who is supportive of BIL (Jonathan Michie). http://www.conted.ox.ac.uk/conference/function_rooms.php#rewley Booked up with summer schools that week. They suggested their Ewart House site in Summertown which is available, but location not so good.

- University Club:  Used this for a barcamp and it worked really well. Number of conference rooms upstairs, bar downstairs, sofas for chilling etc.http://www.club.ox.ac.uk/

- Kellogg College: beautiful building, brand new so no one knows about it (won't be booked up). But it's about a 15 minute walk from TED on the north side of Oxford. http://www.kellogg.ox.ac.uk/ Booked up for a summer school

- Burton Taylor theatre: a 50 seater theatre next door to the playhouse TED venue. It's is used for student plays etc and has lighting and PA. A possible central hub?: http://www.oxfordplayhouse.com/burtontaylor/aboutus.aspx

- Pegasus Theatre: New theatre being built with several small spaces - theatre, cafe etc - it's used for community/youth theatre. Building due to be complete April 2010 but unlikely to be fitted out by July. Not far from central Oxford. Worth asking?http://www.pegasustheatre.org.uk/Page.aspx?PageID=247&ObjectTypeID=3&NodeID=159 Not open till autumn 2010.

- OFS Studio Theatre - a 169 seat theatre and a small 'Loft' space for meetings etc. Owned by Live Nation. Houses student drama.http://www.ofsstudio.org.uk

- North Wall Arts Centre - This place is in North Oxford but would make for a nice setting for a conference like BIL - http://www.thenorthwall.com/theatre.php

- Pitt Rivers museum: this could be a really cool place for an evening. Various rooms available for hire - lecture hall for 75 and a seminar room for c.30. Their site out of date though http://www.prm.ox.ac.uk/museumhire.html Conference rooms were rather dull in comparison to museum!

- Modern art oxford: http://www.modernartoxford.org.uk/Hire/ (cafĂ© / reception area accessible, can have access to the galleries/exhibitions: up to 200 standing, 60 seated) Has wifi. They sounded interested in the event - need to speak to their marketing person.
